Prevention for Positives: FHI Publications Address a Critical Topic
FEBRUARY 2008 — FHI has published a guide for health managers on incorporating prevention in the healthcare setting, and a facilitator's manual and PowerPoint presentation on prevention for positives. Both publications were developed and field-tested in Kabwe, Zambia, with the assistance of FHI's Zambia Prevention, Care and Treatment Partnership and under the auspices of Zambia's Ministry of Health.

FHI Partner Helps to Bring Hope to Hard-to-Reach Areas
DECEMBER 2007 — ZPCT supports mobile services to increase access to counselling and testing (CT) in remote areas and where the distance to a CT affects access. The project aims to increase the number of male clients of these services as well as reach people before they are ill. On World AIDS Day, the project and its partner Bumi Bwesi Youth Centre reached an estimated 1,200 people in Nchelenge, a remote and rural district in the northwest corner of Zambia, with these services.

Geographic Information Systems Strengthen FHI Program Planning
SEPTEMBER 2007 — For Family Health International, state-of-the-art geographic information systems (GIS) offer an exciting way to use data to improve outcomes in our HIV/AIDS programs. In late 2006, we began to explore how GIS can be applied in our programs in Kenya, Rwanda, and Zambia. FHI's offices in Indonesia, Nigeria, and Nepal are also using GIS.

Program Helps Communities in Transport Corridor
MARCH 2007 — In February FHI/Zambia, health officials, and dignitaries launched Corridors of Hope II. Funded by the US President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief through USAID, COH II will be implemented in seven communities through September 2009. The goal is to avert 400,000 new HIV infections and put 120,000 on ARVs by 2010, and provide 600,000 with care and support services by 2008.

FHI Partners with CETZAM to Support Caregivers
MARCH 2007 — Late last month, FHI announced a partnership with the Christian Enterprise Trust of Zambia (CETZAM) that will add a micro finance component to an FHI care and support effort for orphans and other vulnerable children (OVC). By providing small loans to caregivers, CETZAM will help FHI's FABRIC program achieve one of its most important goals: strengthening household income in places where OVC live.

Same-Day Test Results Boost Enrollment in HIV Services
SEPTEMBER 2006 — HIV testing corners at clinics in five provinces of Zambia now offer same-day test results. This has led to a significant increase in the number of clients returning for their HIV test results and enrolling to receive HIV services in rural areas—key to prevention, care and treatment.

Outreach Model Increases Reach of Antiretroviral Therapy
JUNE 2006 — The Zambian HIV/AIDS Prevention, Care and Treatment (ZPCT) Program is working with the Ministry of Health and the central, provincial and district Boards of Health to renovate referral hospitals, laboratories and pharmacies to serve increased number of patients. A referral system has been developed to bring CD4 samples from patients to the laboratory, reducing additional travel time for the patients. These innovations have increased access to antiretroviral therapy in rural areas, reduced transportation and time costs, and decreased waiting times.

FHI, Partners to Implement Six-Year Project in Zambia
APRIL 2004 — FHI and seven partners will implement a $54 million project to build sustainable HIV/AIDS prevention, care and treatment services in Zambia for 2004–2010. The Zambian HIV/AIDS Prevention, Care and Treatment Program will implement program and management strategies to initiate, improve and scale up critical services such as voluntary counseling and testing, prevention of mother-to-child HIV transmission and clinical care for people living with HIV and AIDS, including antiretroviral treatment programs.
