FHI/Zambia's Corridors of Hope II Project Part of USAID's AIDSTAR-One Compendium of African HIV Programs

JULY 2009 — Public health and development professionals have long known that gender plays a pivotal role in the HIV epidemic. Yet little has been known about how HIV programs effectively use gender approaches to improve health outcomes. Integrating Multiple Gender Strategies to Improve HIV and AIDS Interventions: A Compendium of Programs in Africa details more than 30 HIV programs in sub-Saharan Africa that effectively integrate gender approaches and can serve as models for scale-up and replication.

The Zambian Corridors of Hope HIV/AIDS Prevention Initiative (COH II) is among the programs featured. Implemented by RTI International in partnership with Family Health International, COH II is working to decrease HIV transmission, morbidity, and mortality in seven of the border and corridor communities with highest HIV prevalence in Zambia.

The compendium was developed by the U.S. Agency for International Development AIDS Support and Technical Resources, Sector 1, Task Order 1(AIDSTAR-One) project in collaboration with the PEPFAR Gender Technical Working Group.
