FHI/Zambia Documents Benefits of Adherence Support Workers in Care and Treatment Programs
Zambia Prevention, Care and Treatment Partnership Funded by the U.S. President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief through USAID, the Zambia Prevention, Care and Treatment (ZPCT) Partnership is a six-year collaboration between the Republic of Zambia and the United States to strengthen and expand HIV and AIDS services in five provinces. Faith-Based Regional Initiative for Orphans and Other Vulnerable Children The Community Faith-Based Regional Initiative for Orphans and Other Vulnerable Children (FABRIC) is a five-year partnership between FHI and three umbrella faith-based organizations in Namibia, South Africa and Zambia. The objective of the program is to strengthen and expand services for orphans and other vulnerable children (OVC). The initiative uses sustainable strategies to provide comprehensive OVC care and support. For more information, view this brochure about FABRIC.

The Zambia Prevention, Care and Treatment Partnership (ZPCT) is improving AIDS care in Zambia, helping patients return to their families, jobs and communities. FHI Country Director Cathy Thompson discusses efforts to improve working conditions and ease the human resource crisis. (April 2007)

SEPTEMBER 2008 — In February 2006, ZPCT embarked on a groundbreaking effort to test CD4 counts and provide complex antiretroviral regimens for pregnant women seeking prevention of mother-to-child transmission services at their community health centers. More HIV+ expectant mothers who visit primary health centers supported by FHI are having their CD4 counts tested and more are going on lifesaving HAART as a result.
JUNE 2008 — New research carried out by FHI and Zambian Ministry of Health suggests that training community volunteers as adherence support workers (ASWs) is relatively low cost, achieves high-quality results, and may help bridge the human resources gap. Integrated into ZPTC-supported health facilities in Zambia, ASWs are improving their clients' adherence to treatment and the way the facilities function.
