FHI Programs Take Three Prong Approach
FHI uses three main strategies in our HIV/AIDS prevention and care work in Viet Nam to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS:
- Strengthen the capacity of the Ministry of Health/National AIDS Standing Bureau/AIDS Division, provincial AIDS authorities, local NGOs, and other FHI/IMPACT implementing agencies in HIV/AID/STI prevention and care.
- Develop and expand the coverage of effective behavior change and HIV/AIDS/STI risk-reduction interventions in the provinces where FHI/IMPACT works, especially among such vulnerable populations as IDUs, female sex workers and their sexual partners, men who have sex with men, and mobile youth.
- Develop and support the implementation of community-based care and support interventions and materials for people living with HIV/AIDS (PLHAs) and their families/caregivers in the provinces where FHI/IMPACT works, and link them to other appropriate HIV/AIDS/STI prevention and treatment services.
FHI works directly with the Viet Nam Ministry of Health on capacity building, behavioral surveillance, monitoring, and dissemination activities. FHI also works directly with the provincial AIDS and health authorities to conduct a range of HIV/AIDS behavioral change and risk reduction interventions and related HIV/AIDS prevention activities.
FHI's provincial-level activities include behavioral change communication campaigns using multimedia channels; STI skills training for pharmacists and private physicians; peer education, outreach, and risk reduction for IDUs and female sex workers; peer education for men in the workplace; behavioral surveillance surveys for five target groups in five provinces; and support for condom promotion through social marketing in focal provinces.
