OCTOBER 2008 — Vi, 7, is sad when her mother, Hang, is sick and in pain. Hang, HIV-positive and widowed at 28, lives in Van Don district, Quang Ninh province, Vietnam. Once frequently ill, Hang often found it difficult to care for Vi, despite her family's support. Now, however, Hang has access to care, support and treatment through an FHI-supported outpatient clinic for HIV-related palliative care and treatment.

FHI-supported Clinics Participate in Pilot Methadone Program
MAY 2008 — Methadone was administered to the first clients of an FHI-supported government clinic in Hai Phong this month. Methadone is a substitution drug given to injection drug users to help them overcome their dependence on opioid drugs, such as heroin. By keeping people from injecting heroin, methadone helps reduce the spread of HIV and Hepatitis C and reduces criminal activity.

Vietnam Launches Campaign to Reduce Commercial Sex
JANUARY 2006 — Vietnam's Ministry of Health has launched a nationwide media campaign to encourage men to avoid commercial sex. The goal of the campaign's TV and print ads, which portray men in real-life situations where commercial sex is available, is to create new social norms that support HIV prevention.

FHI Supports Launch of Treatment Services in Vietnam
SEPTEMBER 2005 — HIV-positive patients at a Ho Chi Minh City clinic are the first in Vietnam to benefit from new antiretroviral treatment services funded by the U.S. government. Binh Thanh District Outpatient Clinic added antiretroviral therapy to its integrated program of HIV/AIDS services with support from the IMPACT Project.

FHI/Vietnam Country Director Addresses Prime Minister, Other Government Leaders
DECEMBER 2004 — FHI/Vietnam Country Director Stephen Mills, PhD, addressed the recent National Conference on HIV/AIDS in Vietnam. Dr. Mills discussed the challenges facing Vietnam in preventing the spread of HIV and praised the country's early and decisive response to the epidemic. Prime Minister Phan Van Khai and other top government leaders attended. Through the IMPACT Project, FHI is involved in several prevention, care and treatment initiatives in Vietnam that are funded by the U.S. President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief.

OCTOBER 2002 — FHI/Vietnam developed a special set of four-page briefs describing several campaigns and programs in Viet Nam.
