FHI is CORE of HIV Prevention Trials Network

As the Coordinating and Operations Center (CORE) of the HIV Prevention Trials Network (HPTN), FHI/Thailand works with U.S.-based researchers and the HIV Prevention Trials Unit in Thailand. Johns Hopkins University is collaborating with the HPTU in Chiang Mai to develop and implement clinical trials and related studies of HIV prevention interventions as part of the HPTN research agenda.

USAID Funded FHI Thailand Programs, Projects

With USAID support, FHI has worked with local public health organizations and partners to:

  • strengthen programs that address HIV and drug use and conduct research of sexual practices and drug use patterns in Akha Villages, Mae Chen, and Chiangrai
  • develop a model intervention aimed at reducing male-to-male HIV transmission in northern Thailand
  • increase HIV counseling, efforts to prevent mother-to-child HIV transmission, and community outreach for Burmese migrants in Mae Sot, Tak
  • assess the risk behavior of female sex workers, military, and police at the Thailand/Myanmar border to develop peer education, sexual health services, and interventions to prevent the spread of HIV among them.

At one time, FHI's AIDSCAP project (1992-1997) focused almost exclusively on Bangkok. FHI was instrumental in expanding the Bangkok Fights AIDS program, which targeted lower-income people age 15 to 29 in their workplaces, health facilities, and households. We carried out five rounds of behavioral surveillance surveys in Bangkok to monitor trends in sexual behavior.
