Media Campaign Messages Hit Home for MSM

MSM PosterJANUARY 2007 — Last year FHI conducted a promotional campaign that reached an estimated 35,000 men who have sex with men. The campaign stressed consistent condom and water-based lubricant use, and regular HIV testing and sexually-transmitted infection check-ups. A review of the campaign found it reached a high proportion of MSM and that the health and HIV prevention messages hit home.

FHI Addresses Discontinuation of Contraceptives By Women Who Do Not Wish to Become Pregnant

An estimated one million unintended pregnancies every year result from misuse or discontinuation of hormonal contraceptives. FHI researchers are working to estimate how often women who use DMPA, combined oral contraceptives (COCs), and condoms stop using any method or switch to another method. This information will be important to those who counsel women, develop family planning programs, and create strategies that encourage use of contraceptive methods to prevent both pregnancy and HIV.

Researchers Studying Barriers Women Face in Receiving DMPA

Service providers often deny DMPA to women who are late for their scheduled reinjection. FHI is analyzing pregnancy rates among clients up to four weeks late for reinjection to reassure providers that pregnancy is unlikely in these women, thus eliminating one of the barriers women face in continuing use of this method.
