FHI Reaches South African Youth through Soccer
AUGUST 2009 — Over three days of festivities tied to the start of the FIFA Confederations Cup and Youth Day, Family Health International reached out to residents in rural Limpopo province with mobile HIV counseling and testing and training on the basics of sexually transmitted infections and HIV, prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV, family planning, and tuberculosis.

FHI is collaborating with South Africa's national Department of Health to establish and support a network of experts who are committed to strengthening the integration of family planning and HIV services in South Africa. These experts serve as important links among the health research community, policy-makers, and service delivery sites, and they work to ensure that scientific knowledge is applied to improve health programs and policies.

Through USAID's Umbrella Grants Management Project, FHI is increasing access to and use of sustainable, high quality HIV prevention, care, and support services in South Africa. We do this by providing subgrants to non-governmental, community-based and faith-based organizations working in prevention, treatment, palliative care and care of orphans and vulnerable children, and by building the capacity of subgrantees to do this work.

With Partners Worldwide, FHI Researchers Study Microbicides' Potential for Preventing HIV
As the coordinating and operations center for the HIV Prevention Trials Network (HPTN), FHI provides technical expertise for a study to investigate the safety and effectiveness of the vaginal microbicides BufferGel and PRO2000/5 Gel (P) in preventing HIV infection in sexually active HIV-negative women at low risk of HIV infection, and sexually abstinent asymptomatic HIV-positive women.

FHI Works to Improve Continuation Rates of Contraceptive Users
Although injectable contraceptives make up a large percentage of the contraceptive method mix in South Africa, many women discontinue use, either by choice or by returning late for re-injection. FHI is identifying ways to improve continuation rates among women who are satisfied users of injectables and to enhance counseling skills of providers who offer injectables.

FHI Addresses Family Planning Needs of Women and Couples with HIV
With support from USAID, FHI is addressing the family planning needs of women and couples with HIV or at high risk of HIV infection. Together with partners in South Africa, we have developed Contraception for Women and Couples with HIV, a training module for providers who offer contraception to clients with HIV, including those on antiretroviral therapy.
