Improving the Quality of TB Services in Senegal
Success Story: Garden Program Provides PLHA with Food and Income
Success Story: Microcredit Program Allows PLWHA to have a New Lease on Life OCTOBER 2008 — After testing positive for HIV, Mr FT was struggling to find a job and direction. After receiving a microfinance loan through a program implemented by FHI/Senegal with funding from USAID, Mr FT is on his way to owning a fleet of moto-taxis. This program is helping many people living with HIV to have financial independence and stability.

FHI works closely with nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) at the district and national levels to expand and improve their comprehensive response to HIV/AIDS.
FHI Supports Malaria Research in Senegal FHI is supporting the Medicines for Malaria Venture (MMV) in clinical trials comparing the safety and effectiveness of various treatments for children and adults with malaria. We are identifying appropriate sites for the study, training study teams, and monitoring the studies.

MARCH 2009 — "Small changes lead to big results, if you use the right improvement model." FHI Advisor on Quality Improvement and Health System Strengthening, Bruno Bouchet worked with a team of FHI/Senegal technical specialists, personnel from the National TB program, and implementing healthcare providers to review Mbao District's 16 health facilities. They used the collaborative quality improvement (CQI) model to identify recurrent problems affecting the quality of TB care in the district, examined possible causes, and suggested system changes that could bring about improvements.
OCTOBER 2008 — Many people living with HIV/AIDS have limited access to the proper nutrition necessary to maintain their health. Through a USAID-funded FHI micro-garden project, so far this year more than 50 people living with HIV have been trained in how to maintain a nutrient filled garden that also provides additional income for their families.
