The Department for International Development (DFID) contracted FHI/Pakistan to conduct a National Study of Reproductive Tract Infections: Survey of High Risk Populations in Karachi and Lahore. The report launched in August 2005 by National AIDS Control Program Government of Pakistan.

The goals of the study were to measure participants':

  • HIV prevalence
  • STI prevalence
  • behaviors that increase risk of HIV/STI infection
  • self-reported STI symptoms and treatment-seeking behaviors
  • knowledge of HIV and STIs
  • perceived risk of STI/HIV infection

The study targets four main at-risk groups:

  • female sex workers
  • male sex workers
  • injection drug users
  • truckers, including attendants

FHI/Pakistan expects the National Study of Reproductive Tract and Sexually Transmitted Infections will support the NACP, DFID and other national partners with important epidemiological evidence to better target HIV/AIDS/STI prevention efforts and monitor their effectiveness over time. Download the full report for more information, such as background, methods and conclusions.
