In February 2004, FHI/Pakistan organized a five-day workshop to scale up technical capacity of implementing agencies (IA) to design behavior change interventions (BCI) for USAID-funded activities in Pakistan.
Workshop Successful in Reaching Goals
The workshop for IAs had many goals, including:
- introducing FHI programs to local NGO partners
- briefing NGOs about subagreements, technical and financial assistance, reporting procedures, etc.
- identifying target groups, goals, strategies and objectives of BCC for each NGO
- providing guidelines for designing BCIs
- developing work plans, budgets, monitoring and quality assurance mechanism for each project
The event was very successful. Many IAs reported improved understanding of FHI/Pakistan program objectives, activities, target groups, indicators and monitoring mechanisms. And two BCI interventions were reviewed and approved to begin the activities in April 2004. FHI Pakistan officials anticipate even more proposals will be approved for funding very soon.
More Technical Support Planned for IAs
Following the workshop, attendees expressed that there is a continuing need for capacity-building support in the areas of targeted interventions, BCC, peer-education strategies and techniques, and financial systems management. FHI/Pakistan plans a series of technical support opportunities for IAs throughout the year 2004.
