In 2004, Nepal has a concentrated HIV/AIDS epidemic affecting only selected high-risk populations. One of the largest of these groups is injecting drug users (IDU). In this group, new data has shown an extremely high prevalence of HIV.
Previous studies of IDUs in the Kathmandu Valley have already shown important data related to the types of drugs used, injecting and sharing behaviors, and sexual activities that pose a high risk for HIV/AIDS transmission. But such data is not available for major towns outside the valley.
Injecting and Sexual Behaviors fills that research void by increasing the knowledge base about IDUs in these "untested" areas. The report determines the concentrations and numbers of IDUs, and further examines the patterns of drug and sex behaviors, including drug and needle sharing and networking.
