Nepal is classified as a country with a concentrated HIV/AIDS epidemic, meaning that currently the illness is affecting only certain high-risk groups in particular locations rather than affecting the general population at large.
For example, HIV among female sex workers (FSW) in Kathmandu and the eastern terai districts is much higher. Similarly, HIV infection among migrant labor workers who have returned from Mumbai also is high. But little is known about the number, as well as the network and high-risk behaviors, of injection drug users (IDU).
The report Behavioral and Sero Prevalence Survey Among Injecting Drug Users gathers the missing information on this high-risk group. It studies the injecting drug behaviors and sexual behaviors of IDUs in the tourist city of Pokhara and the surrounding valley. The report is based on a behavioral surveillance survey that included 300 IDUs from the area.
The results of Behavioral and Sero Prevalence can be used to design and monitor harm reduction programs for IDUs in the Pokhara valley region.
