The ASHA Project

The FHI/Nepal-led ASHA Project, funded by the US Agency for International Development (USAID), works in partnership with the National Center for AIDS and STD Control (NCASC), Ministry of Health and Population. ASHA activities contribute to the Government of Nepal's National HIV/AIDS Strategy and Action Plan.

FHI has worked in Nepal on HIV/AIDS issues with USAID funding for more than a decade, most recently through the IMPACT Project (2001–2007). ASHA builds on FHI's IMPACT experience by continuing to provide technical assistance to Nepal for HIV programs, including strengthening national capacity, advocacy, policy reform, surveillance, and prevention to care service delivery for most-at-risk groups. ASHA also bolsters USAID's collaborative partnership with government, civil society, and beneficiary groups to deliver a comprehensive response to the HIV epidemic.

Examples of ASHA Project activities include

  • prevention programs for most-at-risk groups
  • treatment, care, and support programs for PLHA
  • advocacy and policy work
  • research and surveillance

ASHA works in 29 districts nationwide, with nearly 50 local partners, including those along the highways from the East to the Farwest and in the Kathmandu and Pokhara valleys. ASHA also collaborates closely with FHI in India to coordinate prevention, care, and treatment services for Nepali migrants and their families.
