FHI, Partners Expand Access to Treatment, Care, and Support for Children
DECEMBER 2007 — With USAID support, FHI organized and co-sponsored the launch of a children's initiative Nov. 29. FHI, UNICEF, USAID, the US and Nepalese governments, and the National Association of PLHA Nepal have partnered to help achieve universal access to treatment, care, and support for children affected by AIDS and their families. Held in conjunction with World AIDS Day activities, NAPN President Rajiv Kafle, Nepal's leading HIV/AIDS activist, attended the event, along with some 100 children and representatives of media, donors, civil society organizations, and businesses.

Geographic Information Systems Strengthen FHI Program Planning
SEPTEMBER 2007 — For Family Health International, state-of-the-art geographic information systems (GIS) offer an exciting way to use data to improve outcomes in our HIV/AIDS programs. In late 2006, we began to explore how GIS can be applied in our programs in Kenya, Rwanda, and Zambia. FHI's offices in Indonesia, Nigeria, and Nepal are also using GIS.

US Ambassador Visits FHI/Nepal Sites
FEBRUARY 2007 — US Ambassador to Nepal Nancy J. Powell visited FHI/Nepal-supported sites in Pokhara, Western Region, Jan. 17. She was accompanied by FHI/Nepal Country Director Jackie McPherson and officials from USAID/Nepal. Ambassador Powell met with representatives from two major beneficiary group networks: the National Association of People Living with HIV/AIDS in Nepal (NAP+N) and Recovering Nepal, a network for recovered and current drug users. She also met with community mobilizers and peer educators.

FHI/Nepal Launches Radio Programs Focusing on HIV/AIDS
MARCH 2005 — FHI/Nepal launched two innovative radio programs that integrate entertainment with HIV/AIDS education messages. Ek Apas Ka Kura (Talking to Each Other) debuted March 12, addressing HIV/AIDS-related stigma and discrimination. The regional radio program Desh Paradesh (Country and Abroad), which debuted March 25, is the first radio program produced in Nepal that uses satellite technology to reach Nepali migrant audiences in communities outside of the country. Both radio broadcasts offer a mix of drama, comedy, music, interviews and talk programming.

Women in Nepal Work Together to Reduce HIV/AIDS Stigma
DECEMBER 2004 — With USAID support, FHI has formed a partnership with Women Acting Together for Change (WATCH) to reach marginalized women at high risk for HIV transmission in Nepal. WATCH works in Kathmandu and the Central Terai region providing HIV prevention messages through information centers and intensive outreach and peer education programs. Soon WATCH will expand its prevention program to include VCT, care and support.

First National Estimates of Adult HIV Infections in Nepal Released
MARCH 2004 — The report National Estimates of Adult HIV Infections, Nepal, 2003, offers detailed estimates of adult HIV infection for the first time in Nepal. In total, National Estimates reports about 60,000 adult HIV cases in Nepal. Nearly half of all HIV cases in the study were found in the major highway districts. Those most vulnerable to HIV infection included seasonal migrant workers, female sex workers and injection drug users.

HIV/AIDS Stigma and Discrimination in Nepal
DECEMBER 2003 — FHI/Nepal commissioned a set of three studies to investigate causes and consequences of HIV/AIDS- related stigma and discrimination in Nepal. The studies explore community attitudes and fears about HIV/AIDS and people living with HIV/AIDS.
