FHI Supports Successful Approach to Community Counselor Training in Namibia
JUNE 2007 — Herlyn Urias was among the first trainees when a new approach to community counselor training was piloted in Namibia in 2004 by LifeLine/ChildLine, one of FHI's local implementing partners. Since then, she has made designers of the training course proud, and has gained international recognition as a community counselor in Walvis Bay.

Church Alliance Strengthens Support of Orphans and Vulnerable Children in Namibia
JANUARY 2007 — The Church Alliance for Orphans has significantly strengthened Namibia's response to the critical needs of orphans and vulnerable children in that country. CAFO is a national network closely affiliated with the Council of Churches in Namibia. Launched in 2003 by the Ministry of Gender Equality and Child Welfare, CAFO has been supported by the IMPACT Project funded by USAID and managed by FHI.

FHI Meets Challenges of the AIDS Pandemic in Namibia

Faith-based HIV/AIDS Initiatives Flourish in Namibia
SEPTEMBER 2005 — Churches and faith-based organizations (FBOs) now provide almost all of Namibia's HIV-related social services, particularly to orphans and vulnerable children and others who need home- and community-based care. The Implementing AIDS Prevention and Care (IMPACT) Project in Namibia supports many FBO programs through technical assistance and training.

U.S. Envoy Visits FHI/Namibia, Catholic AIDS Action Multipurpose Center
APRIL 2005 — Lloyd O. Pierson, USAID's assistant administrator for Africa, visited Catholic AIDS Action's flagship multipurpose center during an official visit to Namibia in March 2005. During his trip, Pierson visited the Bernard Nordkamp Centre in Katutura where CAA runs a program of support for orphans and vulnerable children. The program is funded by the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief through FHI under its cooperative agreement with the United States Agency for International Development.

Namibia's First Integrated HIV/AIDS Services Center Launched
OCTOBER 2004 — FHI/Namibia opened the country's first integrated HIV/AIDS services center in September. The center, operated by Catholic Health Services, is part of Oshikuku Hospital, which serves a catchment area of 96,000 people. The center offers three key services, including voluntary counseling and testing, programs to prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV and antiretroviral therapy for some patients.

IMPACT Project and Partners Host Gathering of Namibian Traditional and Religious Leaders to Discuss Responses to AIDS
AUGUST 2004 — On July 29, the IMPACT Project, ELCIN AIDS Action (EASA)/Western Diocese, and King Josia Taapopi co-hosted Namibia's first AIDS education conference for traditional and religious community leaders. The goals of the conference were to present information about the epidemic, discuss the impact of AIDS on local communities, and encourage new partnerships between traditional leaders and EASA to address the epidemic. The conference was part of a larger community mobilization effort funded by the US President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief.

Private Health Sector Joins National Effort in Provision of Antiretroviral Treatment
APRIL 2004 — With funding from the US Government and guidance from FHI, officials in Namibia recently established the Namibian HIV Clinicians Society. With more than 100 active members, the group will ensure that private practitioners understand the importance of correct management of HIV under the national treatment guidelines. With support from FHI, the Society held a three-day professional development seminar on the management of HIV and antiretroviral therapy. More than 60 health professionals attended.

USAID Official Visits FHI-supported Namibia OVC Center
APRIL 2004 — WINDHOEK, Namibia - Thomas Woods, USAID's Deputy Assistant Administrator, Bureau of Africa, spent five days touring Namibia, visiting USAID activity sites in four regions of the country. During one of his stops, Woods met with FHI staff, volunteers, and children at the Catholic AIDS Action Bernhard Nordkamp Center. The center is home to an after school program for orphans and vulnerable children, which is supported in part by FHI. The visit was an opportunity to learn firsthand that the children of Namibia bear the burdens of social stigma and economic hardship as a result of the HIV/AIDS pandemic.

Storybook Brings Education to More Children
MARCH 2004 — With funding from USAID, FHI has helped Catholic AIDS Action publish Kuana's Birthday Wish, an instructional storybook that provides advocacy information to help orphans and other vulnerable children receive a free primary education in Namibia.

NOVEMBER 2003 — On October 31, Namibian Deputy Minister of Health and Social Services, Richard Kamwi, inaugurated several expansions to the Walvis Bay Multipurpose Center, a program funded by the United States Agency for International Development.

Namibian President Launches Community Development Project in Ongwediva
