FHI Work Eases Spread of HIV in Mexico

Under the USAID-funded IMPACT Project, FHI staff strengthened the capacity of local NGOs in Mexico and Central America. With FHI assistance, local NGOs became better able to conduct HIV/AIDS prevention, advocacy, and policy programs for mobile populations in transit border towns.

Collaborating with the Instituto Nacional de Salud Pública (INSP), Centro Nacional Para la Prevención y el Control del VIH/SIDA (CENSIDA), and Flora National Laboratory, FHI's touched nearly every state and region in the country.

FHI Trains Providers, Focuses on Mobile Populations

In 2004, FHI trained providers in all of Mexico's states on the new national HIV/AIDS/STI guidelines. FHI also aimed interventions at MSM, commercial sex workers, IDUs, and mobile populations via the INSP Mobile Populations and HIV/AIDS project. In addition, we provided technical assistance to cross-border efforts.

CENSIDA and FHI Collaborate on BCC

FHI provided technical assistance in behavior change communication (BCC) strategies to CENSIDA. FHI also promoted use of the female condom in 12 states and targeted interventions to sex workers in locations such as the state of Chiapas.

FHI Supports Flora National Laboratory, a Center for Excellence

FHI worked with the Flora National Laboratory as it upgraded to a regional center for excellence for HIV/AIDS testing. FHI staff provided technical assistance to revise and update the STI syndromic management manual and then disseminate it to and train providers.
