Strong Partnerships Underpin FHI's Past and Present Work in Kenya

Learn about FHI's current work in Kenya.

From 1999 through 2007, FHI implemented the IMPACT Project in Kenya through close collaboration with governmental agencies, non-governmental, community-based and faith-based organizations.  With more than 40 partner organizations--representing a wide array of government ministries/agencies, local and international NGOs, community- and faith-based organizations, and the private sector--we carried out HIV/AIDS prevention and care interventions in the capital of Nairobi and three provinces (Coast, Rift Valley, and Western).

FHI/IMPACT technical assistance and support focused on:

  • Behavior Change Interventions (BCI): FHI assisted local partners in implementing effective peer education programs in the workplace, with commercial sex workers, with women in low-income communities, and in schools. These interventions included developing curricula for primary schools, popular youth outreach, and general information campaigns. FHI also assisted with interactive radio programs that targeted particular communities, reinforcing interpersonal and group communication activities.

  • Interventions to improve delivery of prevention and comprehensive care services: FHI worked to establish and strengthen STI clinical services and outreach efforts, voluntary counseling and testing (VCT), prevention of mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) of HIV, diagnosis and treatment of tuberculosis and other opportunistic infections, and provision of clinic-based HIV/AIDS care and antiretroviral therapy.

  • Community-based HIV/AIDS mitigation interventions: These interventions involved home-based care, psychological support, support for orphans and vulnerable children, and nutrition and positive living support for people living with HIV/AIDS (PLHWA).

  • Support interventions: FHI helped our partners to establish, upgrade, and manage resource centers to provide policymakers and program managers with the latest information on HIV/AIDS, and to improve research and surveillance efforts through behavioral surveillance surveys (BSS) and other evaluative research.

Strengthening Blood Transfusion Services

FHI/IMPACT also worked with Kenya's national blood safety program to improve the country's capacity to provide a safe and adequate blood supply to meet the needs created by medical conditions, surgical procedures, accident casualties and natural disasters.
