Jordan

From 2000 to 2007, FHI managed the IMPACT Project in Jordan to generate and disseminate information on sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and HIV/AIDS and encourage stakeholder involvement and support for HIV/AIDS programs. It reached more than 30,000 people through such initiatives as peer education programs and voluntary counseling and testing (VCT) services, helped the Government of Jordan to develop the first national strategy for HIV/AIDS, and supported the National STD and HIV/AIDS Hotline and Counseling Center. From 2006 to 2008, FHI managed a continuation of IMPACT called Expanding HIV Prevention in Jordan. It provided support to the National AIDS Program and  technical assistance and training to the Government of Jordan, local NGOs, CBOs, and universities in the areas of VCT services, strategic behavioral communication, STI treatment, strategic planning, monitoring and evaluation, and surveillance. FHI also helped expand peer education initiatives for high-risk groups and outreach activities targeting university students and hard-to-reach youth. These interventions contributed directly to the effort to maintain low HIV prevalence in Jordan.

This success story by USAID refers to the difficulties this respected, community-based organization faced in reaching out to sex workers and addressing a taboo subject and outlines what it is doing to make a difference and be part of the solution.
