JULY 2004 — FHI has provided funding and technical assistance to more than 30 faith-based organizations throughout Indonesia to enable them to implement effective outreach activities, HIV voluntary counseling and testing services, clinical services, and innovative care and support for people living with HIV/AIDS.
Program Examples Highlight FHI's Work
Here are a few examples of FHI's work in Indonesia:
The Santo Augustinus Foundation in Sorong, West Irian Jaya provides STI clinic services, voluntary counseling and testing and support to HIV-positive sex workers, clients and members of the community.
The Diocese of Agats, a highly-impacted community in Southeast Papua does community-based education on HIV/AIDS aimed at reducing numbers of partners, reducing stigma and proper treatment for STIs.
Fatayat Nahdatul Ulama, an Islamic women's group, reaches out to female sex workers and clients along a stretch of busy highway in Central Java.
Atma Jaya Catholic University runs a kiosk for injecting drug users in west Jakarta, 50% of whom are already infected with HIV.
Program Results Increase Compassion, Reduce Stigma
These initiatives have helped to establish a more enlightened and compassionate understanding of HIV/AIDS, reducing stigma and discrimination while providing quality, client-centered care.
