Geographic Information Systems Strengthen FHI Program Planning

Researcher holds PDASEPTEMBER 2007 — For Family Health International, state-of-the-art geographic information systems (GIS) offer an exciting way to use data to improve outcomes in our HIV/AIDS programs. In late 2006, we began to explore how GIS can be applied in our programs in Kenya, Rwanda, and Zambia. FHI's offices in Indonesia, Nigeria, and Nepal are also using GIS.

On the Front: HIV/AIDS and the HIV Prevention and Care Program in Indonesian Prisons

Nurse and patient.FEBRUARY 2007 — Expansion of the HIV epidemic in Indonesia is largely driven by injecting drug use. Prisoners are considered to be among those most at risk. So a number of risk reduction and HIV prevention interventions have been implemented in prisons. These include comprehensive risk reduction services and the provision of educational materials as well as antiretroviral and methadone therapy to those who need them.

Indonesia AIDS Program Addresses Immediate Health Concerns Post-tsunami

tsunami devastationFEBRUARY 2005 — FHI medical and disaster relief specialists were sent to Indonesia by USAID's Jakarta Mission in the aftermath of the devastating tsunami that struck the country late last December. FHI/Indonesia Country Director Dr. Steve Wignall, medical epidemiologist Dr. Pandu Riono, and disaster relief specialist Fachrurazi Nazir provided emergency medical assistance and assessed the risk of infectious disease outbreak during their eight-day mission immediately following the tsunami strike on the Aceh Province. Now as relief efforts move from emergency response to reconstruction, FHI staff will work in the region to reduce the vulnerability of women who have lost spouses as a result of the tsunami.

Indonesian Faith-Based Organizations Provide Care and Support

JULY 2004 — FHI has provided funding and technical assistance to more than 30 faith-based organizations throughout Indonesia to enable them to implement effective outreach activities, HIV voluntary counseling and testing services, clinical services, and innovative care and support for people living with HIV/AIDS.
