Lottery Tickets Promote Condom Use in Malang, Indonesia. MAY 2008 — FHI's ASA Project is aiming for 100 percent condom use among the large female sex worker population in Malang, East Java, to help ensure that HIV infection does not spread to Indonesia's general population from those engaging in high-risk behaviors.
Aksi Stop AIDS (ASA) Project OCTOBER 2007 — The Aksi Stop AIDS (ASA) Project , the centerpiece of FHI's portfolio in Indonesia, is designed to assist the National AIDS Commission and the Ministry of Health to respond the expanding HIV/AIDS epidemic in Indonesia in the most appropriate and effective ways possible. Phase II began in October 2005 and runs through 30 September 2008.
FHI's Researchers Support Trials on Malaria and Asian Flu FHI works the Medicines for Malaria Venture (MMV) on their clinical trials in Indonesia that are comparing the safety and efficacy of several treatments for patients with acute, uncomplicated malaria. With support from the National Institutes of Health, FHI provides technical, logistical, and management assistance to the Southeast Asia Influenza Clinical Research Network (SEA ICRN) in establishing a high-quality research network to conduct clinical studies.
Treatment and Care for HIV-Positive Injecting Drug Users MAY 2008 — FHI, along with ASEAN, USAID, and WHO have published a 12 module course for clinicians who provide—or expect to provide—care and treatment, including antiretroviral therapy, for HIV-positive injecting drug users.
Comprehensive Training in Behavior Change for Outreach Workers MAY 2008 — Changing high-risk behaviors related to commercial sex is central to containing the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Indonesia. So FHI/Indonesia is developing a comprehensive training program for outreach staff of over 65 partner NGOs, with the goal of improving their knowledge and skills associated with effective behavior change, with a special focus on increasing the use of safer sexual practices and promoting health-seeking behaviors related to HIV/AIDS.
Summary Report of Key Findings and Program Recommendations from FHI MSM Program Evaluations OCTOBER 2007 — This study, prepared by FHI's Asia Pacific Regional Office (APRO), reveals an overall positive effect of FHI programming on knowledge, sexual risk behavior, and access to commodities and services through a variety of interventions such as behavior change, advocacy, networking, community mobilization, and capacity building. However, quality and coverage were inconsistent from one site to another and there is a need to promote a minimum package of priority interventions along with improved organizational capacity and program monitoring.
