
FHI Leads Consortium Offering Family-focused Approach to Helping Children Affected by HIV/AIDS in India
JUNE 2008 — FHI is leading a pioneering five-year, US$14 million project to support children and families affected by HIV/AIDS in Andhra Pradesh, India. The Balasahyoga program ("active support to the child" in Hindi) is expanding comprehensive, integrated HIV care, support and treatment services in all of the state's 23 districts. FHI-Supported Demonstration Projects Focus on Vulnerable Children and Youth
FEBRUARY 2008 — The SAMARTH Project, begun in 2006, builds on FHI work begun with four projects that started in 2002. The projects now serve as national model sites. Recent visits to three of them took a look at activities focusing on adolescents — read more at CHELSEA WAG, Salaam Baalak Trust, and the YWCA.

FHI Implements Four Projects Funded by Grants from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Aastha Project Cited as Model
The FHI-implemented Aastha Project was cited as a model by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation at the 2006 International AIDS Conference in Toronto. The foundation recognized the project's innovative approaches to the challenge of reducing the incidence of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections for sex workers in the Mumbai and Thane districts of Maharashtra.

FHI Supports Research on Antiretroviral Therapy in India
As the coordinating and operations center for the National Institutes of Health-funded HIV Prevention Trials Network, FHI is providing expertise in site assessment, study design, protocol development, and staff training for a study on the effectiveness of antiretroviral therapy in preventing transmission of HIV in couples in which only one partner is infected.
Expanding Contraceptive Options for Indian Couples
To expand the number of contraceptive options available to women and couples, we are studying the factors that lead women to adopt or reject Depo Provera, an injectable contraceptive, as a family planning method. We are also promoting Depo use among women who desire a long-acting method and for whom injectable contraceptives are safe and appropriate.
