Programs

FHI's program in Haiti relies on a network of public, private, and international agencies. In Haiti, FHI focuses on four main areas:

Prevention through strategic behavioral change.  FHI  targets youth and risk behavior through:
  • Interpersonal communication
  • Group education
  • Mass media campaigns
  • Special events (e.g. activities during Carnival)

Support and care for orphans and vulnerable children and people living with HIV/AIDS (PLHA).  FHI also provides support for:

  • Orphans and vulnerable children living in an institution or among an extended family
  • Community-based organizations involved in caring for and supporting PLHA
  • Clinical referral systems for PLHA

Behavioral surveillance surveys (BSS). FHI is conducting a second-round BSS to collect data about attitudes, beliefs and practices related to HIV/AIDS among specific subpopulations and those at high risk of HIV infection.

Advocacy and institutional support. FHI supports the institutions responding to HIV/AIDS in Haiti by:

  • Strengthening the established media and institutional networks
  • Providing counselors with training and supervision in voluntary counseling and testing
  • Participating in developing the National Standards of Care
  • Playing a leading role in renovating and strengthening the network of voluntary counseling and testing centers
