The USAID/Guyana HIV/AIDS Reduction and Prevention (GHARP) Project

The GHARP Project is a joint initiative of the governments of Guyana and the United States. Funding is provided by the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, through the U.S. Agency for International Development.

The GHARP Project management team includes Family Health International, Cicatelli Associates Incorporated, Howard Delafield International, and Management Sciences for Health.

The GHARP Project is a four-year collaboration between the governments of Guyana and the United States to broaden the country's response to the HIV epidemic.  Its mission is to support the efforts of Guyana's HIV/AIDS prevention, care and treatment programs by improving health infrastructure and systems and enhancing the skills of health care providers.

In conjunction with the Ministry of Health, the GHARP Project works with both government agencies and community-based organizations to improve and expand access to:

  • HIV/AIDS prevention, care and support services, with a particular focus on orphans and other vulnerable children
  • Prevention of mother-to-child HIV transmission (PMTCT) services
  • HIV counseling and testing centers
  • Community, home and palliative care services

The GHARP project and its local and international partners also work to improve the policy environment within the country through:

  • Efforts to reduce HIV-related stigma and discrimination and increase support for persons who are HIV-positive
  • Support for workplace initiatives
  • Policy coordination and management using a multi-sectoral approach

To reach our goals we are providing technical assistance in behavior change communication, particularly in the development of a project communications strategy, and in monitoring and evaluation.
