Programs

FHI/Guinea focuses primarily on preventing the spread of HIV/AIDS in the country through programs targeting the general Guinean population and specific sectors including vulnerable youth, sex workers and other vulnerable women, uniformed service personnel, and truck drivers.

FHI in Guinea

In 2003, USAID/Guinea, through its Reinforcing Efforts for HIV Elimination in Guinea (REVE) project, provided funding to FHI/IMPACT for the design and implementation of a new HIV prevention program focusing on behavior change communication (BCC). Although FHI/IMPACT has been providing technical assistance to USAID/Guinea for various activities since March 2001, FHI/IMPACT established its first Guinea country office in November 2003.

While the primary focus of the REVE project is BCC, model voluntary counseling and testing (VCT) centers and referral services for sexually transmitted infections (STI) are also major components. The coverage of this project is limited to the capital and forest region as well as the primary migratory routes of certain targeted populations. This coverage is based on the findings of the sero-prevalence study completed in 2002, which found that prevalence rates among certain target groups in those regions were higher than the national averages.

FHI/Guinea also continues to provide technical assistance to the national government and project partners in the establishment of a national HIV surveillance system.
