NOVEMBER 2004 — Actor Brad Pitt visited the FHI-funded HAPCSO home- and community-based care program in Addis Ababa on Nov. 6.
During his visit, Pitt met with Tibebe Mako, the executive director of HAPCSO, to learn about AIDS issues facing Ethiopia. Pitt took time to visit homes of people suffering from AIDS-related illnesses, a tutoring class for children, a scouts group, idir representatives, and an orphan-headed household. Pitt also met with eight of Ethiopia's top pop singers and other musicians who worked together to produce a chart topping song promoting compassion for people living with HIV/AIDS (PLHA).
Francesca Stuer, Director of the FHI/Ethiopia program, praised the actor's visit, saying, "We were all struck by Brad's genuine interest and his kindness to the people."
The visit was organized by DATA (Debt, AIDS, Trade, Africa), an advocacy group co-founded by the U2 singer Bono. DATA advocates the United States and other governments on issues related to AIDS and the economy in Africa.
Pitt's visit to AIDS programs in Ethiopia and South Africa was designed to inform the actor's delegation on AIDS and poverty.
