Netherlands Awards FHI $10.8 Million to Expand Program in Ethiopia

JUNE 2008 — Following a $6 million grant in 2006, the Royal Embassy of the Netherlands is continuing to support FHI's work in Ethiopia by awarding FHI an additional $10.8 million. The goal is to expand FHI's technical assistance to the government of Ethiopia and other public health and social welfare organizations.

FHI Works to Improve the Lives of Orphans and Other Vulnerable Children

IMPACT Project Shares Experience, Improves HIV/AIDS Response

FHI/Ethiopia Recognized at International AIDS Conference

AUGUST 2006 — The Ethiopian Kale Heywet Church in Addis Ababa—an FHI associate—is among 25 finalists for the highly competitive 2006 Red Ribbon Award, presented every two years for outstanding community leadership in the fight against AIDS. The award will be presented at the International AIDS Conference.

Documentary Examines Antiretroviral Therapy and Home-based Care in Ethiopia

JUNE 2005 — FHI has produced a 13-minute documentary on the link between home-based care and safe and effective provision of antiretroviral therapy (ART). Shot on digital video, the film documents the work of volunteer caregivers in Ethiopia as they help clients initiate and adhere to complex ART regimens.

Actor Brad Pitt Visits Ethiopia and FHI's HIV/AIDS Program Sites

Actor Brad PittNOVEMBER 2004 — Actor Brad Pitt visited FHI projects in Ethiopia in early November as part of a delegation from the advocacy group DATA (Debt, AIDS, Trade, Africa). Pitt met with youth services groups and leaders of groups of people living with HIV/AIDS. He also visited an orphan-headed household. The visit was organized to inform the actor's delegation on AIDS in Ethiopia.

Ethiopian Officials Study Ghana's Uniformed Services Programs

AUGUST 2004 — Representatives from Ethiopia's uniformed services spent five days in Ghana to learn about HIV/AIDS programs for the Ghanaian uniformed services. Accompanied by FHI staff, six officials from the Ethiopian police, prison and health departments visited program sites in Ghana to attend presentations by officials from Ghana's uniformed services and participate in a daylong workshop on lessons learned. After returning to Ethiopia, the study tour participants conducted a workshop to share what they learned with local officials, as well as with zonal and district-level police.

FHI Inaugurates Home-based Care Training Center

event image of peter lampteyJUNE 2004 — FHI and the Hiwot HIV/AIDS Prevention, Care and Support Organization (HAPCSO) jointly held an inauguration ceremony in late May for the new Home and Community-Based Care Training Center at the Ras Desta Hospital in Addis Ababa. The mayor of Addis Ababa, H.E. Ato Arkebe Ekubay, and FHI's Dr. Peter Lamptey attended the ceremony to mark this milestone event for the two organizations.

Ethiopian Burial Societies Turn Attention to Living

JULY 2004 — Traditional Ethiopian community groups that help families bury their dead, called idirs, are taking on an important new role to serve the living in Ethiopia. Members of these burial societies are contributing personal and financial resources to reduce the expense of home-based care for those infected and affected by HIV/AIDS. FHI joined forces with the idirs to bring home-based healthcare to thousands of people with AIDS and other chronic illnesses.

FHI/IMPACT in Ethiopia Launches Campaign Against Stigma

DECEMBER 2003 — FHI/IMPACT, together with the Addis Ababa HIV/AIDS Prevention and Control Office, launched a unique campaign for World AIDS Day 2003 titled "Compassion, Tolerance and Sensitivity." The campaign reduces stigma by creating a positive environment and promoting compassion, focusing not only on what people should do, but what they can do. A highlight of the campaign is a song and music video promoting it, performed free of charge by eight of Ethiopia's most popular singers.
