Egypt Celebrates World AIDS Day 2004

World AIDS Day is observed around the world on December 1, in celebration of progress made in the battle against the epidemic and brings to light the remaining challenges. In commemoration of World AIDS Day 2004, various activities were implemented by the

IMPACT/Egypt Project, with support from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

Firstly, IMPACT launched Egypt's first anonymous VCT site for HIV/AIDS in Cairo. The remaining World AIDS Day activities in Egypt were planned by the Expanded Theme Group for HIV/AIDS, which includes the Ministry of Health and Population (MOHP), UN organizations and NGOs working in the field of HIV/AIDS in Egypt. Activities around World AIDS Day included 39 radio programs on nine stations and various TV programs raising awareness on HIV/AIDS and promoting World AIDS Day events. IMPACT/Egypt also participated in the distribution of printed materials and competitions among community members.

All of these events culminated in a free musical concert open to the public at Al Azhar Park in Cairo. Roughly 2,500 people attended the concert and were treated to a musical event featuring stars including Khaled Selim, Simone and Habayebna. (View a photo of Egyptian actress and pop star Simone performing at the concert, courtesey of FHI.)
