Regional Workshop on Monitoring and Evaluation of HIV/AIDS Programs Held in Cairo

DECEMBER 2006 — FHI and the Eastern Mediterranean Regional Office of the World Health Organization held a training workshop on the monitoring and evaluation (M&E) of HIV/AIDS programs in Cairo Nov. 22-28. FHI/Egypt designed the workshop to improve countries' capacity to develop and implement sustainable M&E systems for HIV/AIDS programs.

Participants included national HIV/AIDS program managers and senior staff responsible for M&E as well as representatives from nongovernmental organizations in Egypt, Iran, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia and Yemen.

The group learned about methods and tools for comprehensive and participatory monitoring of HIV/AIDS prevention and care programs, including counseling and testing and clinical care programs.

Each country team drafted a national HIV/AIDS M&E action plan and discussed how it might be implemented.

To further strengthen regional M&E activities, FHI is translating into Arabic the FHI-produced textbook, Monitoring HIV/AIDS Programs: A Facilitator's Training Guide.

FHI is a leader in providing training for M&E of HIV/AIDS programs at the national and regional levels.
