FHI/Egypt Spreads the Word about Harm Reduction

Befrienders posterJUNE 2009 — FHI/Egypt recently developed three Arabic language posters on harm reduction in partnership with the local Egyptian NGO Befrienders. Funded by the Ford Foundation, the posters address the needs of injecting drug users, discuss safer sex, and detail the services provided by the Befrienders comprehensive care center (CCC) where they hang. The posters should raise awareness among clients accessing the CCC and serve as job aids for outreach workers who interact with them.

"Clients who have used the CCC since the posters went up have been impressed with the creative design and content," says Doaa Oraby, senior technical officer, FHI/Egypt. "They mentioned that they had never seen posters focusing on addiction and sex that address these topics from the perspective of, 'If you can't quit, then protect yourself.' They said they make them feel cared for instead of fearful or threatened—particularly since sentences in the posters begin with 'Try to,' instead of 'You must.'"
