To ensure the safe handling of blood and donors within blood banks, FHI/Egypt collaborated with the National Blood Transfusion Services (NBTS) and enhanced the knowledge and capacity of blood bank staff to implement standard blood bank operating procedures. With technical experts, FHI/Egypt developed the Basic Blood Bank Practices Training Curriculum and Training of Trainers manual. Topics covered in the Basic Blood Bank Practices Training Curriculum include: • Defining different types of blood donors To ensure the ongoing use of the training curriculum, a corresponding training of trainers (TOT) manual was also developed. FHI supported the training of 32 trainers on the essential aspects of blood safety and the effective use of the training curriculum in 2005. To simplify use, the TOT manual includes presentation slides and handouts. To measure skills learned from the manual, pre- and post-tests are also included.
