
FHI/Egypt Spreads the Word about Harm Reduction
JUNE 2009 — FHI/Egypt recently developed three Arabic language posters on harm reduction in partnership with the local Egyptian NGO Befrienders. Funded by the Ford Foundation, the posters address the needs of injecting drug users, discuss safer sex, and detail the services provided by the Befrienders comprehensive care center (CCC) where they hang.

Meeting Addresses Need to Increase Demand for Youth Friendly Clinics
JUNE 2009—FHI/Egypt and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) conducted a stakeholders' meeting June 8 to discuss ways to increase demand for youth-friendly clinics. Such clinics are needed because Egyptian youth often lack information enabling them to make informed choices about their sexual and reproductive health. They face problems and challenges that are unique to them and that require interventions and information specifically designed to address their needs.

FHI Reviews Counseling and Testing Policies and Practices in the Eastern Mediterranean
DECEMBER 2008 — Being commissioned by the World Health Organization to review HIV counselling and testing policies and practices in the 22 countries in the eastern Mediterranean region meant that FHI/Egypt had an important role at the 18th intercountry meeting of managers of national AIDS programs, organized by the WHO's regional office Nov. 17–18.

Ford Foundation Project Expands HIV Prevention and Care Services
MARCH 2009 — FHI is building the institutional and programmatic capacity of an Egyptian NGO named Befrienders to provide a comprehensive package of HIV/AIDS care and services for key populations at risk of HIV infection in Cairo. The Ford Foundation is funding this successful partnership.

Partnering for Success with the Drosos Foundation
OCTOBER 2009 — Since 2007, FHI/Egypt has been responsible for the Drosos Project, one of the first HIV/AIDS interventions in Egypt to provide harm reduction messages and solutions for active injecting drug users (IDUs) and comprehensive care services to any person infected and affected by HIV/AIDS.

UNFPA Awards for FHI/Egypt Address Quality Prevention and Treatment and Adolescent Reproductive Health Services
DECEMBER 2007 — Two four-month projects awarded to FHI by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) will enhance HIV/AIDS prevention services and the detection and treatment of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in Egypt by providing anonymous, high-quality voluntary HIV/AIDS counseling and testing (VCT), and address the shortage of reproductive health services for adolescents in Egypt.

HIV/AIDS Clinical Care Reference Guide for Physicians Published
JANUARY 2007 — FHI/Egypt collaborated with Egypt's Ministry of Health and Population to publish "National HIV/AIDS Clinical Care: A Reference Guide for Physicians." The guide was developed to train doctors working in Egypt in the diagnosis and management of HIV/AIDS, related illnesses and opportunistic infections.
