FHI/Egypt Disseminates Lessons Learned, Facilitates Regional Workshops
JULY 2007 — USAID has been funding a regional effort to disseminate lessons learned from Egypt's pioneering HIV/AIDS program to countries with similar cultural practices and low rates of HIV/AIDS prevalence. To this end, regional workshops in Cairo have identified best practices and adapted them to meet each country's needs, and experts have been visiting selected countries to provide further technical assistance.

FHI/IMPACT Links Fight against HIV/AIDS to Women's Empowerment
JUNE 2007 — FHI staff in Cairo addressed a group of African diplomats at the closing ceremonies for International Women's Day on the effect of HIV/AIDS on women. Their presentation centered on the role of women's empowerment in the fight against the pandemic: If women can insist on safe sex practices, they can protect themselves and limit the spread of HIV infection.

Regional Workshop on Monitoring and Evaluation of HIV/AIDS Programs Held in Cairo
DECEMBER 2006 — FHI and the Eastern Mediterranean Regional Office of the World Health Organization held a training workshop on the monitoring and evaluation (M&E) of HIV/AIDS programs in Cairo Nov. 22-28. FHI/Egypt designed the workshop to improve countries' capacity to develop and implement sustainable M&E systems for HIV/AIDS programs.

World AIDS Day Activities Raise Awareness, Foster Activism
DECEMBER 2006 — World AIDS Day, observed Dec. 1 each year since 1988, is dedicated to raising awareness of the global AIDS pandemic caused by the spread of HIV infection. Egypt's main event appealed to youth and adults alike. Eight majestic felucca boats (traditional wooden sailing boats) sailed the Nile to raise awareness of Egypt's UN Millennium Development Goals. One of these goals is to halt and begin to reverse the spread of HIV.

FHI/Egypt Contributes to Success of STI Prevention Program
OCTOBER 2006 — With FHI's support, USAID has embarked on a comprehensive STI prevention program in collaboration with Egypt's health ministry. The program has created national guidelines for STI management, training manuals for frontline service providers, and a chart that details common infections and nationally available treatments.

FHI and WHO Organize Regional Training on HIV Counseling and Testing
JUNE 2006 — FHI/Egypt and the World Health Organization put together regional training on HIV counseling and testing in Cairo for AIDS specialists from 14 Middle Eastern and North African countries in February and March. The latest UNAIDS prevalence figures reveal a rise in new cases in the region, creating a growing need to expand the range and availability of counseling and testing services.

FHI/Egypt Celebrates World AIDS Day
DECEMBER 2005 — FHI/IMPACT commemorated World AIDS Day in Egypt with a care and support workshop for representatives from pharmaceutical companies, a workshop for Christian and Muslim religious leaders, and an AIDS awareness-raising workshop for women and children garbage sorters. They also opened Egypt's first NGO-based, anonymous HIV counseling and testing site at Caritas, Alexandria.

DECEMBER 2005 — As part of World AIDS Day celebrations, FHI/Egypt and the Association for the Development and Enhancement of Women conducted an awareness-raising session for underprivileged women and children who work sorting through Cairo's mountains of garbage. Learning the risks of needle-stick injuries can help prevent HIV.

Egyptian Muslim and Christian Leaders Trained to Raise AIDS Awareness
DECEMBER 2005 — FHI/IMPACT and UNDP organized a workshop at which 55 Christian and Muslim Egyptian religious leaders committed to preventing HIV/AIDS through their spiritual and supportive roles. The goal of the workshop was to improve participants' understanding of HIV/AIDS and how they can incorporate messages of tolerance and compassion in their churches and mosques.

The IMPACT Project Celebrates World AIDS Day
DECEMBER 2004 — FHI/IMPACT held various activities to commemorate World AIDS Day Dec. 1. Thirty-nine radio programs on nine stations and various TV programs raised awareness of HIV/AIDS. The day's events culminated in a free concert open to the public. Nearly 2,500 people attended the concert, featuring stars such as Khaled Selim, Simone and Habayebna.

Arab Religious Leaders Sign Cairo Declaration on HIV/AIDS
DECEMBER 2004 — More than 80 Arab religious leaders agreed unanimously to respond to HIV/AIDS throughout the Arab world as part of the ground-breaking Regional Religious Leaders Colloquium held in Cairo early this month. The group later signed the Cairo Declaration, a formal document and acknowledgment of the importance of reaching out to the most vulnerable and developing treatment and rehabilitation programs.

FHI Launches Egypt's First Anonymous VCT Site
DECEMBER 2004 — FHI/Egypt, in conjunction with the Egyptian Ministry of Health and Population, launched Egypt's first anonymous voluntary counseling and testing (VCT) site for HIV/AIDS at the Central Laboratory in celebration of World AIDS Day on Dec. 1. The site offers clients anonymous pre-test counseling, HIV testing, post-test counseling and referrals. FHI hopes that the Central Laboratory VCT site will serve as a model for the rest of the country and the Arab region as a whole.
