JULY 2004 — The Regional BCC Network for HIV/AIDS for East, Central and Southern Africa grew out of a common interest and understanding among a number of regional BCC practitioners dealing with HIV/AIDS that they needed to address common challenges, improve strategies and build capacity in the area of BCC. In October 2001, they formed a BCC Task Force to recommend specific activities for addressing key areas of interest in BCC and for coordinating BCC efforts in the region, including organizing a wider regional meeting for initiating a formal regional BCC Network.
After more than one year of planning, the first Regional Meeting of the BCC Network for HIV/AIDS was held in Kampala, Uganda, on Nov. 3–6, 2003. Nearly 140 delegates from some 20 countries convened to explore regional HIV/AIDS-related BCC issues. The participants included BCC practitioners representing government bodies, regional and national nongovernmental organizations, community- and faith-based organizations, academic institutions and international health agencies.
With support from USAID, the meeting was hosted by the Regional Centre for Quality of Health Care in collaboration with the Regional BCC Network Task Force, The CHANGE Project of the Academy for Educational Development, and Family Health International.
