SMARTgirl to Reduce Risk and Foster Behavior Change

SMART girlFEBRUARY 2009 — A USAID-funded program called SMARTgirl is supporting sexual health among entertainment service workers and their partners in Cambodia. FHI works with five local and international NGOs to implement the program, which encourages at-risk women to use condoms and be tested for HIV and other STIs.

Few Asian Firms Have HIV/AIDS Workplace Programs

DECEMBER 2008 — Only 25 to 30 percent of companies FHI/Cambodia Country Director Peter Cowley approaches about instituting workplace HIV/AIDS programs agree to help, reports TODAY. With an estimated HIV prevalence of less than 1 percent, Cambodian businesses don't see the effect on productivity. But Cowley encourages businesses to engage, because HIV/AIDS "can spread rapidly if we are not careful."

FHI/Cambodia Staff Recognized at International AIDS Conference

AUGUST 2006 — Savy Bou, a strategic behavioral communication officer for FHI/Cambodia, has been named one of this year's Young Investigators of the Year by the International AIDS Society. She was honored at the International AIDS Conference in Toronto this month.

 Film Documents HIV/AIDS Programs for Uniformed Services

cambodia military with familyAUGUST 2004 — A new documentary produced by FHI, UNAIDS and USAID, On the Front: HIV/AIDS and the Uniformed Services, examines recent developments in HIV/AIDS programming for the uniformed services. The film is part of a larger effort by the Uniformed Services Task Force—established by FHI, UNAIDS, the U.S. Department of Defense, USAID and others. The 13-minute film highlights programs from 7 countries, including Cambodia.

Cambodia Increases Access to Care

JUNE 2004 — In Battambang, a province in northwest Cambodia severely affected by HIV/AIDS, a pioneering HIV "continuum of care" approach has demonstrated great success. At Moung Russey Referral Hospital, HIV care and treatment activities have been integrated into existing health services. With USAID support, FHI has worked closely with the National Center for HIV/AIDS, Dermatology and STD to develop clinical trainings and to facilitate the introduction of the new services.

First 'Friends Help Friends' Center Opens

SEPTEMBER 2003 — FHI officials and partners in the Battambang Province of Cambodia opened the first Mondol Mith Chouy Mith, or "Friends Help Friends," center at the Moung Russey Operational District and Referral Hospital. The center's activities include running an HIV care and treatment clinic for PLHAs, providing health check-ups, and offering social activities.

Buddhist Community Gets Involved in Cambodia

buddist monk in cambodiaAUGUST 2003 — Watch a video clip featuring the AIDS work of Buddhist monks at Kien Kes Temple in the Battambang Province. The clip includes an interview with the Venerable Khut Ong, head of the Kien Kes Health Education Network, which raises awareness of HIV/AIDS in the community and supports affected families.
