The IMPACT Project

Through the IMPACT Project, FHI collaborated with the Burundi national government and several national NGOs to strengthen systems for voluntary counseling and testing, care and support, monitoring and evaluation, and surveillance.

Activities in Burundi

  • FHI provided technical support to the research agency CEFORMI in carrying out a national Behavioral Surveillance Survey (BSS) to provide reliable behavioral data for decision-makers developing HIV/AIDS policies and programs.
  • FHI works with orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) through a subagreement with the national association La famille pour Vaincre le SIDA (FVS-AMADE) to help mitigate discrimination against OVC.
  • FHI developed a subagreement with the national association Reseau Burundais des Personnes Vivant avec le VIH/SIDA (RBP+) in the Bubanza province to set up a referral network and provide psychological support to people living with HIV/AIDS.
  • To strengthen care and support services, FHI trains local partners in counseling, treating opportunistic infections and delivering antiretroviral therapy.
  • FHI trained approximately 60 health workers from the private and public sector on opportunistic infections affecting people with HIV or AIDS.
  • FHI assists the Ministry of Public Health and the National AIDS Council in the areas of monitoring and evaluation and prevention of mother-to-child-transmission of HIV.
