Family Health International Voices Support for Increased PEPFAR Funding

WASHINGTON, May 31, 2007 — The U.S. President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief has brought critically needed services to millions of people in the developing world. Family Health International strongly supports President Bush's proposed $30 billion U.S. investment into AIDS programs in developing countries. "Extending PEPFAR for five more years — and doubling its initial $15 billion — is a dramatic step toward improving the health and well-being of some of the world's most vulnerable populations," says Dr. Al Siemens, FHI's chief executive officer.

PEPFAR's programs have benefited the world enormously by averting new HIV infections, bringing life-saving antiretroviral treatment to those who are HIV-positive, caring for these persons and their families, and preventing related illnesses, such as tuberculosis and malaria.

Since 1971, the non-profit FHI has been at the forefront of public health research, prevention, care and treatment in the developing world. Today, FHI conducts HIV research and implements HIV programs in more than 60 developing countries. FHI has reached millions of people with HIV prevention messages, delivered innovative services for children orphaned by HIV/AIDS, and brought antiretroviral treatment to more than 90,000 adults and children. FHI is based in Research Triangle Park, NC.
